Four thousand miles from our Newcastle showroom lies the tiny airport of another Newcastle, in the Caribbean island of Nevis. 8 miles long by 6 miles wide, relatively un-developed and steeped in history, this small and friendly island is blessed by having the extinct volcano Mount Nevis towering to 2323 ft. in its centre with wonderful walks and climbs through verdant tropical rain-forest but fringed all around with classic Caribbean beaches.
A few minutes drive from the airport is Oualie Bay which in recent years has become the second home to Newcastle Furniture Company director Jeremy Pearce. Overlooking the bay and the charming Oualie Beach Resort hotel is ‘Tamarind’, designed by Jeremy and constructed from Greenheart wood sourced and shipped in from Guyana. This elegantly conceived house with furniture all detailed with the same straightforward, timeless and classic style as the villa itself, has breath-taking sunset views across the channel to neighbouring sister island St Kitts. Newcastle Furniture Company were busy from the beginning of the two year construction phase, designing and making all the fitted furniture and most of the free-standing – for the living room, three bedrooms and bathrooms.
The open plan living room and kitchen flooded with light and entered from the veranda, is a wonderful social area for friends and family to congregate and is furnished in distinctive Newcastle Furniture style.
A blend of contemporary design and time-honoured craftsmanship features throughout the interior, with examples such as the moveable louvre doors which allow for refreshing breezes to circulate, side-by-side with traditional sash windows with modern detailing all made by Newcastle Furniture and shipped out from Newcastle to Newcastle.
